What’s the Quantum Threat?
Quantum computers, once scaled, have the potential to break current encryption methods — particularly those based on RSA and ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) — in a fraction of the time it would take classical computers. That means today’s secure data could be tomorrow’s open book.
For the UK’s businesses and public sector, this poses a serious challenge. Our current infrastructure was never designed with quantum resilience in mind.
When Will It Happen?
While general-purpose quantum computers are not yet mainstream, the “harvest now, decrypt later” tactic is already in play. Threat actors could be storing encrypted data today, planning to decrypt it once quantum capabilities allow.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has already issued guidance encouraging organisations to start preparing for Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) — encryption designed to withstand quantum attacks.
